Begining at puberty, when self awareness usually apears in teenagers, it tends to gradually become more and more severe even if the individual is loosing a considerable amount of body weight... up to 20% of the initial weight, cousing them to be hospitalized to prevent starvation or even death.
Anorexia Nervosa pacients show an astonishing determination to acomplish that which in their mind is the perfect body, thus resisting terrible hunger
pains, even if they are literally only skin and
bones. The fact that they might gain weight is a serious problem for them, making them even more determined not to eat.
One of the weirdest things about Anorexic people is that they prepare big feasts for others, refusing to take part or even eating in front of other people. Weight and food are real obssesions for them, making them take strict and exousting exercises routines. Very severe problems may affect women and men: impotents in the case of men and irregular menstruatind periods for women are one of the many consequences they have to deal with.
The most specific symptom of Anorexia Nervosa is that the pacient refuses to maintain a healthy body weight in comaparasin with other people the same build and age.
Fear of gaining weight is a serious problem for anorexic individuals making them act in a drastic way, continuing to starve them selves even if they are in a very precarious situation. In their opinion their body weight is thightly related to the image that other people have of them, thus the concept the slimer the better.The seriousness of the problems that they have eludes them actually, rendering them incapable of evaluating their own body weight from an objectiv point of view, making the fact that they need a doctor even more obvious.
In women that might be suffering from Anorexia missing three consecutive menstruating cycles is a very serious symptom that must be taken in consideration. This only adds to the evidence that the pacient must be hospitalized. Only after treatment and hormone administration would the woman pacient be menstruating again.
