Why Massage?
Author: Jim BartramWe've all heard of the benefits of massage: reduced stress, reduced pain, increased circulation, and lower blood pressure. But, how can massage do all this?
Relaxation is one of the keys to breaking the cycle of
stress.
Stress puts our muscles in a continuous contracted state. And just like
lifting weights or doing isometric exercise, it causes lactic acid buildup and the deprivation of oxygen. This buildup of lactic acid causes pain and pain causes more stress. Massage aids in the flow of fresh nutrients and removal of toxins, thus breaking the cycle of stress.
Massage can play an important role in our circulation. The circulatory system delivers life giving nutrients into our cells and removes metabolic byproducts. Between the capillaries and the cells is an extracellular space where the exchange of nutrients takes place. Quite often, plasma proteins leak into this space and block the exchange or hinder it. Massage aids in pushing trapped plasma proteins into the lymphatic system which them dumps them back into our circulatory system helping us function on a more optimal level.
