Will Slimming Pills Help you to Lose Weight?
Author: David Burns

You may need to lose a little weight for a forthcoming special occasion or perhaps you have noticed you are "out of condition" when climbing the stairs. Whatever the reason for wanting to lose weight, in today's world you expect to do it quickly and with the minimum of effort. If this is your situation you maybe considering the use of slimming pills as an aid to your weightloss program, but will they help?

The basic concept of weight loss in a normal and healthy person is simple-

Output must exceed Input.

In other words, during your daily routine, you must burn off more calories than you consume by eating. So how will slimming pills help you to do this?

There are several pills promoted especially on the Internet, however, the only drugs that are established as safe and available on prescription are Orlistat and Sibutramine although they are often marketed under different brand names.

These two basic drugs do not operate in the same way. Orlistat reduces by 25% to 30%, the absorption of fat as it passes through the digestive system. Silbutramine boosts chemicals in the blood stream (serotonin and noradrenaline) which influence the brain. This action causes a person to feel that they are not hungry. These drugs will usually only be available through your doctor and will only normally be offered to people who are seriously over weight. One reason for this is that there can be side effects especially for those with a medical condition and a doctor needs to assess each case carefully.

So what about the slimming pills you can buy over the counter or from the Internet. Many of these may not harm you but most will be of little use. Some of the pills offered are not approved by the pharmaceutical industry and the claimed success rate is based on very little research and data. The packaging often gives little information on ingredients and safe usage. Many pills are offered with a diet or lifestyle plan, and it is this, rather than the actual pills which account for claims of successful weight reduction. Again taking such pills without discussing it with your doctor could be unwise especially for those with a medical condition especially if already on medication.

Beware where slimming pills are offered with the following

Offered with the suggestion that no changes to your existing diet or life style are required.

Offered, together, with a "fad" diet which may not be a proper balanced diet.

Offered with the promise of very rapid weight loss.

It has taken thousands of years for the human race to evolve and over this time our bodies have developed to be sustained on a basic simple diet which includes fruit and vegetables, no additives and generally modest quantities.

Our bodies were also evolved to undertake a reasonable amount of regular exercise.

Some of us have spent many years trying to change this by over eating and consuming lots of favourite foods some with additives to which we can become mildly addicted.

The fact is, that there is no quick fix, except under close medical supervision.

Perhaps it's time for you to check out a change in lifestyle which includes a proper balanced diet and a little regular exercise.
