Music Therapy Can Show Results in Improving Schizophrenia Symptoms
Author: Groshan Fabiola

Some researchers say they have made a study, and they discovered that in what concerns psychiatric in-patients with schizophrenia, music therapy can improve some of the symptoms created by this disorder. Music therapy for people with acute schizophrenia has never been evaluated before, and this research is a step forward.

For this study with music therapy, there was decided that some patients will receive standard care alone, and other will receive music therapy. This was not a large-scale study, was quite a small one, involving 81-in patients, but the results are encouraging. Those that followed the music therapy had between 8 – 12 sessions, once a week, for 45 minutes. They were also given access to some musical instruments, and were encouraged to try to express themselves by using these instruments. After the test finished, researchers made investigations, and they discovered that the improvements were greater among those people receiving music therapy than among those who had received standard care alone.
Because of the music therapy, there were seen reductions of the general symptoms like depression and anxiety, and also of the negative symptoms of schizophrenia, like emotional withdrawal.

The result of the study is that music therapy is a way of working with people which are acutely unwell, it is a way to help them to express, the therapist will help them to interact through music in an enjoyable, constructive and creative way. Sometimes, there are symptoms of schizophrenia that do not respond well at drug treatment, so music therapy is a method that can help very much by reducing some of those symptoms.
It is believed that there is sufficiently evidence about the effects of music therapy, and there should start a larger explanatory randomized trial of music therapy for people with schizophrenia, and the purpose of this trial should be to explore the effects and cost-effectiveness of this kind of therapy.

As a conclusion, we may say that the result of the test that has been made is a step forward, now the patients with schizophrenia have another option, that will come in addition to the classic treatment, and they will experience an improval of the symptoms, especially in some cases when the drug treatment doesn't show result. The therapist will help them to express themselves, will help them to interact through music in a constructive and creative way, and will also try to follow the patient's emotional state in musical terms.
