Symptoms of Anemia

The main symptoms of iron deficiency anemia include: constant tiredness and lethargy, aches and pains, and paleness. Iron deficiency anemia can also cause brittle nails, shortness of breath, and loss of appetite. Sometimes, the symptoms of iron deficiency anemia are misdiagnosed and "hidden" under the symptoms of another disease; this is especially true when the anemia is caused by another condition.

People at risk from anemia

Statistics show that iron deficiency anemia is present in 50% of pregnant women and 20% of all women, higher than in the male population. Iron deficiency anemia in women may be caused by menstruation so women need to take extra care with diet during the heaviest flows of their cycle. Exercise is also essential in the prevention and treatment of anemia, as it stimulates blood flow and increases iron absorption.

In Mexico, studies showed that babies who had their umbilical chords clamped 2 minutes later than usual did not suffer from iron deficiency anemia for up to 6 months after birth. This was despite the fact that they were not fed an iron-rich diet.

Treatment of Anemia

The most effective treatment of anemia is the taking of iron supplements in conjunction with a well balanced diet. Iron deficiency anemia responds well to a diet that includes meats like pork, beef and lamb as well as all offal. Shellfish, anchovies and sardines are also foods recommended in the treatment of anemia. There are also cereals fortified with iron available, as well as pasta, bread and rice. Green vegetables belonging to the cabbage family and legumes are rich in iron and effective in the prevention and treatment of anemia. The most effective way to take supplements for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia is on an empty stomach with a rich vitamin C source like orange juice. Iron is absorbed into the bloodstream from the stomach, and vitamin C is known to aid absorption. Avoid antacids and milk, which inhibit iron absorption and can hinder treatment.
