Drug Risks When Pregnant
Author: Groshan FabiolaIn the cases of women risks, problems and complications can be very sever if any narcotic drugs are used. The amount of drugs that can create dependence is very small in their cases. This is why a lot of second thoughts must be given to the simple fact of drug usage; by the time the woman may decide to seek help their addiction may have already installed being very difficult to treat. Drug usage in women can cause a lot of nasty side effects like health problems, sexual transmitted diseases and mental problems like depressions.
In the cases of women a remarkable discovery has been made: studies have shown that many of them who decided to use drugs have lived a very troubled life. As a fact, it has been discovered that most of he women that decided to take up drugs have been sexually abused at some point of their lives, but most often before the age of sixteen. Again a tendency to start using drugs and alcohol has been found in women who have had one or both parents abusing the same things.
From the psychical point of view, a certain pattern has been found to stand out dorm the other: this way we see that people who have low self–esteem or very little self-confidence tend to be more likely to be using drugs than normal people. With the beginning of using drugs or alcohol the feeling of not having the power to do anything installs creating even more problems for the person and making rehab even tougher. A feeling of isolation and loneliness installs in the patients mind. Certain women from minority groups or the ones not knowing proper English could find it difficult to seek and get good medical help.
Problems and risks are even grater in the cases of pregnant women; not only are they seriously endangering their lives but they are also putting at very hi risks the life of the un borne child. Serious health problems may occur during the pregnancy if any drugs or alcohol are abused of. We all know that the mother and child are very tightly linked together so f the mother uses or takes any drugs it's more certainly sure that the child is going to suffer from them to. This way we see a lot of risks that are brought upon the un borne child; he may be infected with HIV if the mother gets it, AIDS, may suffer a premature birth, low birth weight or may even end up dying in the mother's womb. Further continuing to abuse drugs after the child's birth may also lead to neglect, malnutrition and in very often cases physical abuse.

Faq About Ovarian Cysts
Author: Groshan Fabiola1. How important are the follicular cysts?
The follicle contains the egg which is normally released from this sac when it is mature enough. After the sac had ruptured and set free the egg, it will normally disintegrate. But when this sac does not rupture it will continue to grow and if it ends up measuring more than 8 cm then surgery is necessary. In most of the cases they do not get so large because they shrink after ovulation. If the follicular cyst breaks then pelvic pain will be felt by the women for at least 24 hours due to the bleeding which irritates the abdominal cavity. If bleeding does not stop then he surgeon must interfere and resolve this problem.
2. How are the follicular cysts diagnosed?
Diagnosing such cysts is made with an ultrasound tool. Also, a pelvic exam is helpful in a lot of cases. Without any complication the follicular cysts will disappear after 3 to 6 weeks. Sometimes the ovarian cysts can be confused with ovarian cancer so more tests must be done in order to be sure of the diagnose.
3. What is the corpus luteum cyst?
Generally after the egg is removed from the follicle and if the woman is not pregnant the follicle has to transform into luteum( also known as the yellow body), a smaller sac and then disintegrate. If this small sac gets filled with liquid and measures more than 3 cm it will form the corpus luteum cyst which will remain inside the ovary. This cyst generally ruptures during sexual intercourse and in the last days of the menstrual cycle.
In both follicular cysts and corpus luteum cysts cases, oral contraceptive therapy seems to prevent them from forming.
4. What is the endometrial cyst?
The endometrial tissue is normally found in the uterus but sometimes it can form in other places like outside the ovaries. They are produced during the menstrual cycle by hormone simulation and contain blackish blood which gives them the name of chocolate cysts. Their rupture leads to pelvic pain as all the material they contain gets in that area and creates adhesions between the local structures.
5. Are there any symptoms for the ovarian cysts?
At the beginning while these cysts are still under 3 cm there will be no symptoms. If they get to be larger than 10 cm or they rupture than pain on both sides or only on one side of the abdomen will occur. This pain differs in intensity during the menstruation cycle for each type of ovarian cyst.
6. Is there a risk of infertility if I have ovarian cysts?
The endometrial cyst is the only one that can interfere with the egg release and pickup. These cysts do not affect the quality of the egg but they can affect the ovulation and the follicular development.
7. What other ways are there of diagnosing an ovarian cyst besides ultrasounds?
There can be performed blood tests along with MRI and CT scanning in order to exclude the possibility of an ovarian cancer.
8. How exactly are these cysts treated?
Many gynecologists will recommend the patient an oophorectomy, meaning that the ovary will need to be removed. Sometimes even the hysterectomy will be considered as a measure of treatment. Some surgeons try to remove the cysts safely without spilling any of their contents into the abdomen and then try to reconstruct the ovary.

Forms of Rosacea Treatment
Author: Groshan FabiolaAny person with symptoms assembling the ones present in Rosacea must immediately see a dermatologist. If you are diagnosed with Rosacea, you should know there is no actual cure for the condition and its real cause of development is still unknown. Ways of keeping Rosacea under control are still available and must be used in order to prevent the condition and its symptoms from evolving into more serious complications. The currently available treatments for Rosacea are aimed on reducing the facial redness, the skin eruptions and the skin inflammation.
After he has established a precise diagnose of Rosacea, the dermatologist will prescribe oral antibiotics to prevent eruptions like papules or pustules and keep the condition under control. After the initial phase, an antibiotic gel will be required to control facial symptoms such as inflammation and redness. Together with your physician you will try to find out which of your lifestyle factors are contributing to Rosacea and control them to avoid further flushing or blushing.
The use of oral antibiotics is also restricted due to its side-effects like stomach problems and increased sensitivity to sun, so the most durable and helpful treatment will be to identify and control the triggers of the condition. Signs of improvement will only appear after a few weeks of treatment and you will need to keep using topical products as Rosacea cannot be cured and requires a permanent treatment to prevent further complications.
The most commonly used oral antibiotics in the treatment of Rosacea are Tetracycline, Minocin, Minocycline and Erythromycin. Additional skin care products containing vitamin K, Arnica and minerals may also be supportive for the long-term treatment.
Alternative medication for preventing the occurrence of papules and pustules are products containing the vitamin A and found in products like Accutane or Roaccutane both with increased content of Isotrentinoin. This particular product has high anti inflammatory properties and works by inhibiting the function of the sebaceous glands physically shrinking them.
The most benefic topical medication for Rosacea seems to be since 1989 Metronidazole helping to reduce the flare-ups and keep the condition under control. This medication can be found under different brand names such as Metrogel, Metrolotion and Metrocream with an amount of 75% Metronidazole, and Noritate with 1% active product.
Another miracle treatment for Rosacea seems to be Rosacea Ltd III containing zinc oxide, magnesium sterate, iron oxide, sodium chloride, polyethylene glycol and sulfur. The manufacturing company affirms all Rosacea sufferers have experienced real improvement after 40b days of using the product.
For preventing papules and pustules from appearing on the facial skin surface, azelaic acid seems to be also helpful.

General Information About Diabetes Mellitus
Author: Groshan FabiolaDiabetes mellitus is a disease in which the glucose metabolism is affected, causing the level of glucose in blood to increase (hyperglycaemia). Glucose can be found in the urine too in patients who suffer of this affection. The accumulation of glucose in blood is caused by an insufficient secretion of insulin or by a malfunction of the insulin. Insulin is produced by the pancreas and its role is to take the glucose from the blood and make it enter the cells of the body which use it for producing energy.
If the glucose metabolism is affected the body gives signals to the brain which will increase hunger and so more food will be eaten. This way the glucose level in blood will increase more rapidly causing toxic products to appear (ketones). If these products are not discovered soon they will cause diabetic ketoacidosis which is a life-threatening condition.
Treatment of diabetes focuses on lowering the level of glucose in the blood and on protecting the patient from the consequences this disease causes.
Diabetes is classified into three types: type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes.
The first two types are chronic affection and the third one disappears after pregnancy is done.
Type 1 is known to occur during childhood and was named as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The pancreas is not able to produce the insulin any more as the cells responsible to this process have been destroyed by the body. These patients require insulin injections permanently.
Diabetes type 2, also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus occurs mostly during adulthood. In this case the insulin is not produced in sufficient quantities or it is not effective on the body cells.
Type 1 is not as frequent as type 2 is. In 1995 there were known to exist 430,700 Australians who suffered of diabetes. 19% of them were affected by diabetes type1. The rest were considered to be mostly type 2 diabetic patients. Nowadays scientists believe that for every diagnosed type 2, there is one other undiagnosed type 2 patient.
In some cases diabetes is a result of a misuse of certain drugs, or a result of a different affection like: endocrine diseases, pancreatic diseases, infections, genetic diseases, and misusage of drugs and chemicals.
The treatment will help the patient control the level of glucose in blood and ameliorate the symptoms; the doctor will also help the patient letting him know what he is allowed to eat and what he must avoid; will advise him what to do when he feels sick and will tell him where he can procure his diabetes supplies.

Hepatitis C- Basic Information
Author: Groshan FabiolaHepatitis is the medical term for a condition that has as a result the inflammation of your liver. In most of the hepatitis cases, the inflammation is caused by an infection. The other reasons that can lead to hepatitis are alcohol abuse, different types of medication, poisons and even other diseases. There are different types of hepatitis, one of them being hepatitis C. This particular type of hepatitis is caused by the hepatitis C virus.
Here are some very important facts to remember when suffering form hepatitis C:
- if the inflammation caused by the hepatitis C virus is not reversed in time, it can lead to chronic hepatitis; in turn chronic hepatitis can lead to chronic disease of the liver, that can go as far as liver failure or death;
- if other hepatitis treatments did not work and you find yourself in the situation of a liver failure, the only thing left to do is a liver transplant;
- an astonishing number of almost eighty percent of the people that suffer from hepatitis C also develop the chronic hepatitis C form;
Nowadays, hepatitis C has become a very serious threat worldwide. In some countries, like the United States Of America, at the top of the causes that lead to liver damage is hepatitis C. The hepatitis C virus is very spread and many Americans are victims. The hepatitis C virus is also the reason for about twenty percent of the acute hepatitis and more than fifty percent of the cirrhosis cases are believed to be caused by the hepatitis C virus. There are many people that have antibodies for the hepatitis C virus, thing that means that they were exposed to this hepatitis virus once in their lives.
The hepatitis C virus is very contagious and is mostly transmitted through blood products or blood. Contaminated needles are a very big part of infection with hepatitis C. People who use drugs intravenous and use dirty needles are very much at risk of developing hepatitis C. Blood transfusions are also a risk factor when hepatitis C is concerned. Nowadays, there is a test that is done to see if the blood that will be given to another person is infected with the hepatitis C virus.
There are also other causes of infection withe the hepatitis C virus, but they are less common. The hepatitis C virus can be passed down from mother to infant or through sexual intercourse.

How Does Tuberculosis Manifest?
Author: Groshan FabiolaTuberculosis can give a lot of symptoms to a person but there are cases in which patients came to the doctor for other problems and they are discovered this disease too. Sometimes tuberculosis gives only night sweats and the patient will not go to the doctor only for such a mild symptom. Generally extrapulmonary tuberculosis is encountered in those who have a weakened immune system and have other important diseases associated too.
The most affected of extrapulmonary TB and military TB are the patients who have AIDS. In those patients symptoms vary from chest pains and night sweats to morning coughing with blood. In those who are in a bad status loss of weight might be encountered along with these other symptoms. At the physical exam the doctor will hear with his stethoscope diminished breath sounds and coarse crackles.
It is not easy to diagnose tuberculosis as the symptoms can be found in other diseases too, like: lung cancer, asperigollosis, pneumonia, sarcoidosis, pneumoconiosis, diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism and mediastinial lymphadenopathy.
The doctor will ask for a thoracic X-ray. If tuberculosis is present on the thoracic X-ray cavitation, calcification and nodes will be seen. Other tests must me done to be sure the disease is tuberculosis. A biopsy is indicated also, and if it shows granulomas and caseation then there is a confirmation of tuberculosis. Sputum can also be tested to see if it contains the Koch bacteria. If the tuberculosis is not localized in the lungs then the urine can be taken as a sample and analyzed or the LCR or even the blood. The lymph noses biopsy can be made because tuberculosis can shed there too. If the doctor thinks the tuberculosis affected some other organs he will take a sample of liquid from the pleural space, the pericardial space, or the peritoneal space.
In those patients in which the sputum test got negative the bronchoalveolar lavage can be tested too to eliminate any possibility of misdiagnosing. This is done with an optic bronchoscope which is passed from the mouth or the nose towards the trachea and then the lungs. This procedure is not painful as the doctor uses a lidocaine spray to locally sedate the patient. With the bronchoscope a sample will be taken from the alveolar space as a saline solution will be entered the lungs to flush out bacteria and loose cells. This solution will be collected and tested in the end of the procedure.
With the help of the bronchoscope biopsy can be performed from small tissue samples from the bronchi. These samples will be analyzed in the laboratory to see if they are infected with the Koch bacilli.

How to Evaluate your State of Health if Multiple Sclerosis is Suspected?
Author: Groshan FabiolaCertain things may make a person ask her self if she is starting to suffer from multiple sclerosis. If a person has a blurry vision or has maybe trouble concentrating that doesn't necessarily mean that she or he are suffering from this terrible disorder. Something else may to blame for a whole other reason. It's a well known fact that multiple sclerosis has a lot of symptoms similar to a lot of other disorders of the central nervous system. Still, as said earlier, if any signs of the disease appear in any person, checking with the doctor should be the next thing to do. Early diagnosing of the disorder and early treatment has shown to greatly improve the slowing of the rate of witch the disease progresses.
A special diagnosing from your doctor may also be a bit tricky considering the fact that there isn't a specific set of rules to follow in order to correctly see if that specific person suffers from the disorder. The best thing to do is to let the doctor asses the symptoms that the patient has said he is suffering from. The next thing to do is let the doctor give you a compleat physical check in order to see if other more subtle symptoms are also present. These symptoms may be either changes in eye movement or very minute changes in speech patterns. If still a proper diagnosis can't be made further tests may include a RMI scan or a spinal tap. Treatments have shown that they are able to improve the state of the patient, and the fact is the earlier the treatment begins the better the chance is that the effect will be stronger in the patient.
People are different one from another. Thinking of this we realize that it is the same thing about how the disease affects the patient. Some people may this way experience very diverse symptoms while others just a few. Even if the symptoms are not showing damage is being done to the central nervous system, damage that gets worse and with the passing of time. Treatments are available now in many forms but it is important that the patient stays in therapy if the chance to slow the action of the disorder is ever to exist.
The way that the disease actually works is that because the nervous cell loses its myelin it's more predisposed to get damaged. The optic nerve suffers some serious damage because of this: it gets swollen causing blurry vision in a matter of days after it has started. Pain may also be felt especially when moving the eye.

Important Factors To Avoid In Preventing Osteoporosis
Author: Riana LanceThe tendency to develop osteoporosis depends on a number of factors, important ones of which are listed below:
Age: The chances of getting osteoporosis increase in women after the age 45-50, while in men 65-70 years.
Gender: As compared to men, women are 4 times more susceptible to osteoporosis since their bones are lighter and thinner than of men.
Race: Studies have revealed that Asian and Caucasian women are more prone to get osteoporosis than other women are.
Bone structure and body frame: Shorter people are at a larger risk of osteoporosis, as they possess lesser bone mass, loss of even some of which can be critical enough to lead to osteoporosis. Thinner people are also at a greater risk of osteoporosis since they possess lesser fat. Fat cells make estrogen, whose deficiency causes bone loss in women.
Genetic factor: People with family history of osteoporosis are at a greater risk of osteoporosis.
Malnutrition: Lack of proper nourishment may lead to the deficiency of vital nutrients essential for the bone health (like calcium, vitamin D) and hence increase the risk of osteoporosis
Smoking: Smoking also enhances the risk of osteoporosis.
Alcohol use: In people who drink heavily, boss loss is far greater than its formation. However, a recent research has shown that consuming moderate amount of alcohol may actually increase the bone density. Thus, cutting down the amount of alcohol to mild or moderate amounts would be a better option for your bone health.
Soft drinks: Regular consumption of soft drinks with a high amount of phosphoric acid can hinder absorption of bone.
Sedentary lifestyle: Too little or physical activity and weight bearing exercises like walking, running, dancing, weight lifting or climbing stairs can weaken the bones. Exercises also make your balance better and reduce the likelihood of falling.
Certain medical conditions: If you are suffering from certain medical conditions, like hyperthyroidism, or have a disorder that hinders proper utilization of calcium and vitamin D, you at a larger risk for osteoporosis.
Certain medications: If you are on medications like corticosteroids, generally used for treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma for 6 months or a longer period, you are susceptible to steroid-induced osteoporosis. These medications are the common cause of osteoporosis seen in men.
Caffeine: A high amount of caffeine can also increase the osteoporosis. Thus, you must limit the intake of coffee, tea, cola, chocolates etc.
Anorexia: Anorexia refers to loss of appetite due to certain medical condition or deliberately fasting to lose weight. Such a condition often creates a deficiency of nutrients (like calcium, vitamin D) required for bone formation, hence increasing the chances of getting osteoporosis.
Discover How To Get Motivation For Exercise
Author: Sam MorovyExercise is one of those activities which, while universally accepted to be good for the body, is, as much as possible avoided by most people. For those who exercise due to their doctors' order, the activity is like one of the bitter pills to swallow. What is needed here is motivation. With the right motivation one can do even difficult tasks. So, how does one get motivated?
First, you have to know yourself in terms of motivation. What motivates you? Are you the kind of person who is externally motivated- that is, you need outside motivation in order to move or start with whatever project is at hand. Or, are you the type who is internally motivated, which means the power to stay motivated is within you. Maybe, you are both internally and externally motivated. Whatever makes you motivated, it should be clear to you.
Then, set your goal which, in this case is to exercise. Goals must be specific, measurable and time bound. By time bound it does not mean that one has to stop after reaching the goal. It could be continuous if that is the timeline stated in the plan. Examples of goals are: to lose 2 kilograms weight within 10 months or to walk 2 kilometers daily after 6 months. Record these goals which could include realistic photos after the target weight loss has been achieved or a chart showing the target walking distance per month.
Make a plan on how to achieve the goal. The goal should state the overall goal and the short-term goals .Make a list of activities with specific dates. Many goals are not achieved because there is no clear set of action plan or activities to reach the goal. The plan should include the schedule and place of the exercise. The plan should also be written. If you are motivated externally, let people whom you think can help monitor your progress know about the goal and the action plan.
Implement the plan. There should be some record here to document compliance to the plan. It could be as simple as a mark in a calendar. Measure the results every short term period. If you planned short term goals every month, make a record of how much weight was lost or the new distance walked. If the goal was achieved, reward yourself. If the short term goal was not met, analyze why and make catch up plans to be on target next month or reset the goals.
Make a commitment to faithfully follow the plan. If the results show that the plan does not give the desired results, review the plan by yourself or with the help of experts. Commitment is the most important part of the success of any program
Make exercise a part of your day to day activities. Make a schedule when you have to exercise and not just accommodate it if you have extra time.
Be well informed of the benefits of exercise. Make a separate plan to educate yourself on the benefits of exercise. This should be a more extensive reading list. If only every person is so well informed about the functions of the different systems in the human body and how exercise helps to keep them healthy, exercise would not be like a burden. Modern technology has resulted to many machines and gadgets that need thorough study on how it functions before they can be used effectively. Many people consider mastery of the operation of these machines a must to keep up with modern living. Why not master too the only body each of us has? Exercise does not just result to weight loss or harder muscles. There are more important benefits inside the body that one can appreciate only if he or she is well informed of how the body functions.
Exercise should be an enjoyable activity. One way is to make exercise less boring by listening to your favorite music while walking or doing whatever exercise you have in your plan. Another way is to exercise with family members or friends.
Start to exercise and you will have the most effective motivation to continue - the good feeling of a healthy person.

Behind The Mystery Of How Creatine Works
Author: Sam MorovyFor most scientific minds, this question would not be mind boggling or even strange to ask. For the normal person, this question is truly one of the many scientific questions not easily answered or understood. What will follow is an explanation of Creatine that is easy to grasp and absorb.
Creatine is a chemical waste molecule produced from muscle metabolism. Simply put, it is the product taken when creatine phosphate, which an important energy molecule in the skeletal muscles, breaks down. This is not a unique product. In fact, it is present in all human beings and is produced according to the individual's muscle mass. It is important in the energy production process in muscles.
According to medical experts, 95-98% of creatine phosphate in our body is stored in our muscles and about 2% of this is converted into creatinine every day. The remaining 2- 5% of creatine can be found in various other parts of the body including the brain, heart and testes. This chemical waste molecule, creatinine, is filtered throughout the system by traveling through the bloodstream to the kidneys. The kidneys, in turn filter these out of the body through a person's urine.
Despite the fact that Creatine is a chemical waste molecule, it still has a very important and essential diagnostic purpose. Creatine has been found to be acceptably reliable in indication possible kidney disturbances. How does this happen? When the levels of Creatine rise this usually means that the kidney's are damaged or impaired in some way. Logically speaking, as these level continue to rise, the worse the state of the kidney can be. Abnormally high levels of Creatine can be real serious indicators that there is possible sever kidney malfunction or that the kidneys can fail, even at times when patients do not experience any outward symptoms of kidney problems. Because of this standards and processed have included checking the blood and urine for the levels of Creatine produced in the system.
Medical studies show that there are standards already acceptable for Creatine levels in a person's body. Normal level of Creatine found in the blood range from 0.6 to 1.2 milligrams per deciliter in adult males and 0.5 to 1.1 milligrams per deciliter in adult females. As the production of this chemical waste molecule is dependent on muscle mass, it follows that more muscular young or even middle-aged adults may find higher levels of creatinine in the blood than what would be the standard for the general population. Similarly, older people may find less Creatine in their system, again depending on the muscle development over the course of their lives. For example, in the case of an elderly person, particularly fastidious about his/her physical development, more Creatine may be found in the blood and urine tests. Infants and children have the lowest level of 0.2 as a standard but these changes, again, depending on the muscle development. Persons who find abnormally high levels of Creatine in their system are advised to undergo treatment through the use of a dialysis machine which removes the chemical waste from the body.
Interestingly enough, creatine is also something created and recommended as a supplement in someone's diet. The idea behind this is that in this fast-paced, health conscious world, people are more likely to take better care of their bodies. One way this is done is through consistent hard work out. And when this happens the person burns up a lot of calories. A body's supply of Creatine is not without limits. Once you have used up the stored creatine in the body's muscles, on normally has to wait before one is able to exercise the muscles again. Taking a creatine supplement would mean increasing the levels of stored creatine and thus having more energy and more enjoyment while working out. Another thing is creatine supplements have been known to benefit athletes. It must be remembered though that these supplement must be taken in recommended doses with a combination of physical activity to produce results that are physically based.
So basically, how creatine works is that it helps in the use of muscles in general. It is the energy behind the movement of this system. An abnormal level of Creatine, which is the waste product from creatine breakdown, is used to check the well-being of a kidney. On the other hand, creatine supplements can be used to build energy when using muscles and muscle mass as a result of this.

Sure-Fire Weight Loss Strategy
Author: Cliff Baker2The two most important steps to losing weight and keeping the weight off are:
1 - Eat Less If your calorie intake is greater than your calorie expenditure then you will put on weight. Therefore to lose weight you need to create a calorie deficit, the energy (food) taken in, must be less than the energy burned. Food and water, is the energy your body needs to exist. Your body needs only so much in order to operate.
Here are some ideas for eating less
Don't eat after 7 p.m. If you stick to this, you cut out late night snacks, which are a killer for adding weight.
Eat smaller portions. Eating 5 or 6 smaller meals a day is better than eating 3 larger meals, ideally eating something every 3 hours or so will trickle feed you body with fuel. Cutting your portion size down for each meal, you cut down on the amount of energy coming in. But you must make this healthy food, no fast food, processed food, high fat food, white breads, white rice or white pasta...always go for the wholemeal varieties. This alone will be one of the biggest ways to eat less.
Eat a sensible breakfast, low in fat with protein and some carbohydrates. You need to get your body functioning again after not eating since last night. You are breaking your fast. Remember portion control and everything in moderation.
Snack on foods like, fruit, nuts and seeds. Nuts and seeds are a great source of good healthy fat, as well as protein. Most of us consume too many bad fats and not enough good healthy fats.
2 - Exercise More You need to burn more energy than your used too, but that does not mean you have to run half marathons every day. To do this you need to increase your activity. You can do this quite easy if you just put a little thought to what your daily routine is.
Note: If you are not used to exercise, go and see your doctor and get a health check and get his approval before you start anything strenuous.
Here are some examples:
Say you work on the 6th floor, start by taking the elevator to the 5th then walk one floor, do this for a week. The next week take the elevator to the 4th and walk up two floors etc, this will ease you in slowly if you take no or little exercise at present. You'll soon start to feel the difference. Don't think of it as exercise, think of it as activity. You will be surprised at how easy it is to increase your activity level!
Take your dog for a walk, or a neighbors if you don't have one. If you do not have a dog to take, take a walk anyway. It doesn't have to be very far. Just take a walk however far you want, uphill is even better. Just do more activity than you have been used too and you will feel better and start burning more energy than before.
Remember ANY activity is better than none.
If you can, start weight training. Muscle burns energy efficiently. If you build muscle, it replaces fat and makes you a fat burning machine!
Try to think of other creative ways to cut calories and increase energy expenditure. I'm sure you can come up with many more ideas. This will be a great start for you. Keep in mind it is much easier to start, and stick with these steps if you have someone to share in your activity.
Small activity and eating changes made every week will add up. If you try to much change too soon, it will be harder to stick too.
A final thought - The best time to plant a tree was 5 years ago. The second best time is right now!
This can be applied to losing weight. The best time to start may have been in the past, but the second best time is right now. Don't get discouraged. This is a lifetime commitment and a life changing goal. Be easy on yourself, but be committed and you will see progress!

The Interconnection Between Bodybuilding And Fitness
Author: Michelle BeryEnthusiasts of bodybuilding know of the hard work that is required to achieve and maintain the sculpted bodies for which they aspire. A regimented diet is certainly a large component of bodybuilding - cutting fat and focusing on lean protein to feed the muscles of the body and maximize nutrition. But when it comes to achieving the ideal look that most bodybuilders are after, the connection between bodybuilding and fitness is undeniable.
Bodybuilding and fitness are so inseparable because the building of muscle mass is so largely dependent upon intense and committed workouts. Bodybuilders will tell you of the hours upon hours that they dedicate to the gym - doing cardiovascular work, stretching, and engaging in significant weight training. For those in competition, this training is imperative to success. Any competitor will tell you that bodybuilding and fitness go hand in hand; without one there is no other.
For many embarking upon bodybuilding and fitness, there must be small steps taken in order to work up to a full exercise regime. To achieve maximum fitness it is imperative to combine cardiovascular work with core training and weight training. Cardiovascular work may include everything from running and walking to dancing and kickboxing. To follow, intensive core training such as Pilates or yoga will work to strengthen abdominal muscles, improve flexibility, and keep muscles limber.
But when it comes to bodybuilding and fitness, nothing does more to build and maintain muscle mass then weight training. Whether using weight training machines or free weights, lifting weights - when done correctly - will bolster and sculpt muscle mass throughout the body. Bodybuilders rely on weight training to achieve their fitness goals. However, it is most important that if you don't have experience with weight training that you have professional instruction in order to learn the proper techniques. Weights, when lifted incorrectly, will only serve to injure rather than improve muscles.
For those looking to improve their bodies and even compete in bodybuilding competitions, it is imperative for them to incorporate a consistent regime of diet and exercise into their lives. For this reason, bodybuilding and fitness will continue to be an inseparable and lasting combination.

Why Fiber Is A Very Healthy Addition To A Good Diet
Author: Dan DaileyDespite the hype that too often accompanies the praise, fiber is a very healthy addition to a good diet. It's no miracle cure, but a substantial amount of insoluble fiber does help move material through the colon faster. It has a cleansing effect on the digestive system. By improving the solidity and bulk of solid waste it also helps to keep those who are aging more regular, less constipated. The result, supported by many studies, is (among other benefits) a reduction in the odds of colon cancer.
Insoluble fiber, so-called because it doesn't dissolve readily in water, can be found in nuts, wheat bran, whole grains and many vegetables. But there's another kind called, not surprisingly, soluble fiber. As the name suggests it does dissolve readily in water. It, too, has benefits.
Soluble fiber is found in citrus fruit like oranges and lemons, apples, beans, oats and barley grain. Among its other virtues, studies strongly suggest that some soluble fibers (beta glucan) can help reduce cholesterol.
But, as with every other aspect of diet, it's best to have everything in the proper proportion. What is that, in the case of fiber? The recommended consumption for the average adult over 50 years of age is 21g for women and 30g for men. For those under 50 the amounts are 25g for women, 38g for men.
Of course, that's only an average (for men about 170lbs, women around 120lbs). You'll want to consult tables to find out the needed amounts for your weight. There are those rare individuals who are sensitive to certain foods and they will need to seek out sources of fiber that suit their particular circumstances.
But, as a rough starting point, there are several common foods that will be right for most.
A cup of raisin bran cereal has 7g of fiber, and is usually manufactured with helpful vitamins as well. A cup of oatmeal is a good source, even though it only contains 4g. A half-cup of cooked black beans contains about 7.5g. A half-cup of tomato paste has nearly 6g, while a half-cup of cooked Lima beans has nearly 7g.
Bran muffins have been touted as a good source of fiber, and that's true, they are. But many also are high in fat and sugar, so exercise moderation and seek out a low-fat type. A couple dozen peanuts can also be a good source of fiber, but here again they are high in fat. Control the urge to get large amounts of fiber from them. You don't want to pile on the calories when getting needed nutrients.
Many fruits are a good source of fiber, including raspberries (1/2 cup contains 5.5g), blackberries (1/2 cup has 3.8g) and apples (3.3g per apple). Even pumpkin is a good source (3.5g in 1/2 cup), but this too can be a source high in fat and sugar, if it's in the form of pumpkin pie.
A slice of bread has 2g, so the average sandwich will supply 4g. But be sure to get whole grain bread, not the ultra-processed white.
Put both soluble and insoluble fiber in your diet and be good to yourself.

Facts About Nutrients For A Healthy Back
Author: Ron KeeganThere is hope for people with chronic back pain. Yes, you can use nutritional supplements to control back pain, and finding the right supplement is the key to a successful rehabilitation.
Many people believe that one of the answers to back issues is the use of nutritional supplements. They believe that by taking certain daily supplements you can help to relieve a person's problems and the pain they cause. As a matter of fact, the feeling is that nutritional supplements will strength the cartilage as well as a person's bones. It will diminish inflammation and help to loosen the muscles. As long as you understand that these supplements will not work overnight, they are an answer to back pain that means investing in a long-term solution, then there is not a reason not to try them. As long as you understand that nutritional supplements are for those who have chronic back pain not for those who suffer the occasional pain problem.
Understanding the Types of Supplements Supplements are divided into two groups. One works hard to strengthen different areas in your back and in this way helps to eliminate pain by giving your back a better defense system. The other group is pain relievers. If you have chronic, constant, back pain they can be of use as well. When taking any of these supplements be careful to read the instructions. Some are hard on the stomach and so need to be taken with food, others must be taken on an empty stomach and some cannot be mixed with others. Read the labels and take them exactly as directed if you want them to work for you. Even nutritional products can be detrimental to your health if used wrongly.
Nutrional Supplements Need Time To Work Most of the supplements take a few months of use before you will see any improvements at all. If you are going to use a Calcium and Magnesium mix, often sold in one pill, then you should also use Boron. While it's the job of the Calcium and Magnesium to strengthen bones the Boron will help your body to better absorb the other two. Vitamins C and D as well as Glucosamine Sulfate are for building stronger cartilage, strengthening the bones and helping the muscles. Another supplement to help with muscles strength is S-Adenosylmethionine
The other supplements work to relieve pain in a variety of ways. Some of them diminish the inflammation. This would include Bromelain, Devil's Claw, Turmeric, Flax Seed, Boswellia and White Willow Bark. Bromelain is often suggested for use in athletic injuries, following surgery or if the person suffers from any type of arthritis.
Pain Releif With No Side Effects Some of these have dual purposes. For example, Devil's Claw also has the ability to make the effects of medications prescribed by your health care provider work better. Cayenne has the ability to improve blood flow. This is very important as improved blood flow promotes healing. It is taken by mouth for that purpose but it can also be used as a cream to help with the pain of strained muscles. White Willow Bark is a good pain reliever with all the same effects of aspirin without the potential side effects and Niacinamide is used to help promote the healing of cartridge.
You now know some basic information about Nutritional Supplements and helping you with your back pain. Now is the time to do your own research and find a supplement that will help in your back care recuperation.
Aromatherapy Diffusers - Smell your Way to Better Health
Author: Daphne Nelson
One way to make a room fragrant is with the use of an aromatherapy diffuser. Diffusion is the process by which scents are emitted into the air and subsequently inhaled. In other words, it serves as an air freshener.
You may say, "why not just use the air sprays you can buy at any drug or grocery store?" Well, you could, but since those products usually contain synthetic materials, you wouldn't get the benefits associated with using pure essential oils.
The Nose Knows
Inhaling essential oils is believed to offer both physical and psychological benefits. As scents are inhaled, the smell travels across the olfactory nerves located inside the nose and then up into the part of the brain that controls our moods, our memories and our ability to learn. This area is called the Limbic System and when stimulated releases endorphins, neurotransmitters and other \'feel-good\' chemicals. The aroma of a natural essential oil triggers this reaction.
The naturally occurring chemicals in essential oil are drawn into the lungs and can supply a physical benefit, as well. Depending on which essential oils you use, inhaling them can enable you to:
Relieve headache pain
Relieve nasal congestion
Relieve cough
Combat nausea and vomiting
Combat insomnia
Relieve depression and uplift your spirit
Remain alert
Enhance your libido
Types of Aromatherapy Diffusers There are several types of aromatherapy diffuser devices on the market such as:
Electric fan diffusers
Candle diffusers
Nebulizers
Reed diffuser
Lamp rings
Electric Fan Diffuser - This method of diffusion uses a fan to blow the essential oils into the air. The essential oils are usually placed on a tray or pad within the unit and then plugged in to a power supply to allow the fan to blow the scent into the air. Traveling? No electrical outlet readily available? Try the battery operated aromatherapy fan diffuser!
Candle Diffusers - A candle aromatherapy diffuser uses a ceramic or metal bowl to hold the essential oil while a tea light or some other type of candle is used to gently heat the aromatherapy oil. The heat causes the oil to slowly evaporate into the air.
Nebulizers - A nebulizing aromatherapy oil diffuser is a device that breaks down essential oils into smaller molecules before dispersing them into the air. These smaller molecules are more easily absorbed by the lungs creating a greater therapeutic benefit than the other diffusion methods. A nebulizer is made up of a base (usually plastic) that contains the motor, and a glass piece that holds the oils.
Reed Diffuser – Reed diffusers are becoming more popular because they are asthetically pleasing. In reed diffusion, essential oil is poured into a bottle; reeds, which look like little sticks, are then inserted into the top of the bottle. The reeds become moist, absorbing the essential oils and emitting scent throughout your room. Occasionally turning the reeds refreshes the scent. The scent from a reed diffuser can last for several months.
Lamp Rings - Lamp rings are made of terra cotta and sits directly onto a light bulb. The rings have a grooved lip that holds the essential oil. The heat from the light bulb heats the essential oil and it's gently diffused into the room.
Diabetes, the Fact, the Fiction
Author: Jeffrey A Solochek,IWe grow up hearing so many wives tales that sometimes we have no idea what to believe is true and what is false. Like I had always heard that if you give yourself an injection and there is air in the syringe that you could kill yourself because you would be causing a jump in your heartbeat. Is this Fact or has this been stretched a wee bit beyond to the point of fiction?
I was first diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when I was 28 years old. I was afraid to give myself shots of insulin because I did not want to take the chance of injecting too much air into my system. Truth be told, it would take a whole lot of air for it to affect you negatively. I was told that if you ever get a low blood sugar that somebody should right away give you something sweet. Do you know how long after eating a chocolate bar for it to affect your blood sugar? Even orange juice, one glass, would take about 15 minutes to just affect your blood sugar by maybe 5 points.
For the first year I had somebody else give me my injections which got to be pretty damn expensive. Insurance would not cover this so I was paying cash for this service. I thought if I ate some candy right before taking a blood sugar test that it would elevate my sugar right away. This is another untruth.
These days I am trying to improve on the types of foods I eat as well as getting enough exercise. Wheat bread is so much better for you than White. Whole grain wheat is even better. Pasta made with white flour is another no no. They have what is labelled as Sugar Free white bread but you need to not look at the sugar but instead look at the Carbohydrates. My wife will get me something that only has 5 grams of sugar and she thinks this is great. But when you look at the carbs and see that it has like 90 carbs something that had 30 grams of sugar would be better for you.
Another item you need to look at which is not on the label of a lot of products is the foods Glycemic value, the lower the number the better it is for you. Look at a bake potato which may have a glycemic value of 90 and then look at a sweet potato which only has a glycemic value of 30. Which one do you think is better for you? Do you think that all sweet potatoes are bad? White potatoes are a definite no-no.
Are you diabetic? Do you want to be almost like a normal person where you can have a hot fudge sundae? I had my doctor prescribe me the insulin pump because as far as being diabetic goes when on the pump this is the closest you can get to being normal unless you clone a healthy body and are able to have your brain transplanted.. Medicare actually pays like 80% of the cost of a pump and if you have a supplement in addition then your cost will be almost nada.

Depression – Suicide and the Sexes:
Author: Abigail FranksSchools and daycare centers should almost be considered Ground Zero when it comes to lice. Head lice, those pesky little white bugs that seem to make their way to your child's head every so often will probably return soon. The reason is that the lice problem continues to be a growing issue in many of our schools.
There are many claimed ways to get rid of a lice infestation. The problem is that almost as many cannot be relied on to be effective or work in your situation. This is because even a single head louse can re-infect a person within weeks. One of the most common reasons for a re-infestation is not following the directions no matter if a commercial or more natural product is used.
Many products, even the natural ones require re-treatment after 7-10 days. Many parents will deal with the initial outbreak and dutifully use a product or remedy then not do the follow up. The child is allowed back into school and everyone goes back to their daily routine. The follow up treatment to kill any other lice however is never done and a re-infestation occurs.
These parents are the ones that claim that the treatment program doesn't work! It wasn't a treatment program or product that didn't work, but the lack of following the directions. Some even claim that resistance to pesticides is the reason why the lice were not killed.
Another very common mistake parents make is not using enough of the product. This is especially true of insecticide based commercial lice products. Making a lice treatment shampoo stretch in attempt to save a little money is shortsighted. These medicated shampoos are designed to poison lice and it needs to be applied in adequate amounts to be effective.
Natural head lice remedies also have specific directions that if tried, should be followed. Many of these natural treatments instruct the user to generously apply a common household oil based product like mayonnaise to the infected head. The mayonnaise is then left in the hair overnight.
You can check out the site below for additional information on another method of killing head lice using pesticide free essential oil products. These are safer and milder than the pesticide based shampoos.
The whole premise of using mayonnaise or other various oils is essentially used in an attempt to suffocate the lice bugs. These home remedies usually do not work if only because lice can survive submerged in water longer than nine hours. This means that if you have any chance of smothering the lice, that mayonnaise or oil needs to be left in the hair a long time.
The point is that no matter what had lice treatment you select, it's important to follow the directions exactly. Getting rid of lice in your home is not difficult, but it does require consistent actions.

2000 Years of Stress Relief
Author: Mitamins Team"Stressed out" is a common phrase these days. While some stress is healthy, unwanted stress can be harmful - and it is harmful stress that is becoming increasingly common today. A huge industry has grown up out there on claiming to provide stress relief. Stress and anxiety seem to be the new illnesses of the modern age and stress management and stress relief therefore assume paramount importance. But who can we trust?
Symptoms of Stress Before we look at stress relief and reduction, we should first look at stress symptoms. The most common ones are:
1. Easily Distracted
2. Nervousness
3. Excessive worrying
4. Irritability
These symptoms could progress into
depression, extreme fatigue, headaches, hyperventilation, dizziness, pains in the chest, and nausea. Stress is common to almost everyone at some point. However when things get worse and the feelings do not subside then external stress relief becomes necessary.
Natural Stress Relief How does stress relief work? The first step should always be to identify the cause of the stress and anxiety. The sooner stress relief measures are taken, the better it is for the treatment. However, the cause of stress can often be something that is not easily avoided. For example, if the cause of stress is our job, then it becomes necessary to deal with the stress rather than remove the source altogether. This is where the need for
natural remedies for stress relief becomes more important.
Ginseng for stress relief A natural remedy that has been touted for stress relief is ginseng. Asian ginseng is a small tree that commonly grows on mountain slopes and is usually harvested in the fall. The root is used, preferably from plants older than six years of age, in the treatment of a number of conditions. This herb has been known for centuries (twenty of them) to reduce fatigue and to take away the negative impact of stress. It has been suggested that ginseng acts as a stress relief because of its beneficial effects on the adrenal glands. Chinese researchers have done studies which indicated that ginseng improved the quality of life but there has been no study which categorically proves that stress relief is one of the results. Many researchers say that more study needs to be done in how ginseng works on the body. Until then, ginseng's stress relief properties remain something to be believed rather than proved. However, that belief is based on 2000 years of personal testimony and so is hard to ignore. In addition, ginseng does not have any harmful side-effects, meaning more people are willing to at least give this herb a try.

Is Weight-loss Surgery for you
Author: Abigail FranksOur child's school and daycare centers should be considered the main battle field when it comes to fighting head lice. Those, annoying and yucky little white bugs are likely to strike again and find their way to your child's head very soon. This is because head lice continues to be a big growing problem in most schools today.
There are a lot of claims regarding way to battle and get rid of a lice infestation. However, many of these so called lice treatments can't be relied upon to work in your particular situation. The problem is that even a single louse can re-infect your child within weeks. The most common cause of reinfestation is from failure to follow all the directions.
Most of the products available, whether they are chemical or natural, require repeat treatments after 7-10 days. Many people will treat once, not see anymore lice, and don't follow up with the rest of the treatments. The child goes back to school and everyone gets back into their daily routines. Because the follow up treatments to kill any lingering lice is not done, reinfestation occurs.
These individuals will then make claims that the treatment used doesn't work. It wasn't the product or treatment program that didn't work properly it was not used in the proper way to insure killing all of the bugs. People will go as far as to say the reason for the filure was because the lice had a resistance to the pesticides in the product and so they did not die.
Another common mistate that parents make is to not use enough of the product. This occurs with many of the insecticide lice products because parents try to stretch the product too far on multiple children. This is done in an attempt to save money but it is vital that enough product is used to ensure the death of all the head lice.
Natural remedies for fighting head lice also have directions that need to be followed exactly as stated. Many of these natural treatments tell the parent to apply generously a readily available household oil product like mayo to the lice infested head. The mayo is then left on the hair through the night. The amount of time the product is left on the head is vital in getting rid of the lice.
You can check out the site below for additional information on another method of killing head lice using pesticide free essential oil products. These are safer and milder than the pesticide based shampoos.
The whole idea of using mayonnaise or other various oils is essentially used to suffocate the head lice. These natural remedies do not always work because lice can survive submerged in water longer than nine hours. This means that if you have any chance of smothering the lice, that mayonnaise or oil needs to be left in the hair a long time.
What I am trying to say is that no matter what treatment you choose be it chemical or natural, you need to follow the directions carefully. Many people have had success with all the products and home treatment options but none of them are a guarantee if you don't make the necessary steps to finish the job right.

Vitamins For Women - Cutting Through The Clutter
Author: Brett SeagrottWhen reading about female health issues, invariably the subject of vitamins for women will come up. With so many options, choosing the right vitamins can be a web of confusion. First, it is important to understand that the word vitamin is usually used interchangeably to describe not only vitamins, but also minerals, phytonutrients, amino acids, enzymes, herbs and a whole host of other nutritional supplements.
Women's Nutritional Needs
Because of their unique nutritional needs at various times in their life cycle, women require gender specific nutrients when it comes to vitamins for women. To maintain a healthy diet, the average female requires five to eight daily servings of fruits and vegetables. This is no simple task given the typical diet of women today and the stressful lifestyles most lead. It has been reported that nearly half do not eat any fruit and 80 percent only eat leafy green veggies, which contain protein, fiber and antioxidants, once every four days. Furthermore, consider the fact that vegetables have lost much of their nutritional composition in the last 60 years. A good example is spinach. 100g of spinach has lost 137mg of its vitamin C content since 1950.(Japan standardized ingredients list).
When your body doesn't get the nutrients it eventually develops marginal deficiencies which can produce a whole host of problems. Some of the more common include:
Mood swings
Fatigue
Nervousness
Headaches
Confusion
Muscle weakness
And, with sustained nutrient deficiencies, the average person puts themselves at risk for serious diseases, such as cancer, hypertension, Alzheimer's and heart disease.
So, if the average diet is unable to supply the all nutrients needed in sufficient daily amounts, what can a woman do to make sure her body is protected? The answer is really quite simple - sensible supplementation. By taking supplements with the correct balance of vitamins for women, along with a wide range of all types of micro-nutrients, a female will be able to keep her body in balance, stay energetic and remain disease free.
High Vitamin Doses Not Required!
Before you rush out to purchase a multi vitamin and mineral formulation, it is important to remember that if you already maintain a reasonable diet, you don't need supplements with high doses of vitamins and minerals.
Most vitamin supplements available in the market contain way over the top dose amounts of vitamins and minerals. These are the cheapest ingredients in supplements! While they are important, they are only required in small amounts. Far more important are the amounts of key phytonutrients and herbal extracts contained in a supplement.
Derived from plant extracts, high potency phytonutrients are powerful, antioxidant disease fighters. While there are many vitamins for women type products containing some phytonutrients and standardized herbal extracts, most are manufactured to a price and can't afford to include enough nor in sufficient potencies to be of benefit.
Clinical studies have shown certain nutrients to be particularly effective and beneficial in treating numerous health conditions and for preventative health measures;
L-Glutathione
Blueberry
Bilberry
Resveratrol
Turmeric
Zeaxanthin
L-Glutathione - A Key Ingredient!
L-Gluthathione is the most abundant antioxidant enzyme in your body, and crucial for cell health and organ survival. As a person ages, their production of this vital substance decreases. However, because of its exorbitant cost ($800 / kilo wholesale) most supplements do not include it in their list of ingredients.
Supplements containing L-Glutathione must contain the 'reduced' form of the enzyme so that it can penetrate the intestinal cell walls. Supplement manufacturers often cut costs by including the much cheaper 'regular' form which offers extremely low absorption levels. L-Glutathione is highly susceptible to destruction by stomach acid so any supplement containing it must be enteric coated.
Hormone Balancing Herbs
In addition to phytonutrients, herbal extracts are key ingredients in vitamins for women products. Certain herbs help to maintain and/or re-balance hormone levels during menstruation and menopause and help ease discomfort and associated symptoms. Five key hormonal precursors are:
Black Cohosh
Red Clover
Dong Quai
Wild Yam
Isoflavones
These are key ingredients to look for in vitamins for women supplements!
Amino Acids - Powerful Proteins
Known as the building blocks of proteins, amino acids play a key role in increased energy, healthy immune, nervous and musculoskeletal systems, balancing hormones and blood sugar and overall brain health. Essential amino acids and derivatives include:
L-Taurine
L-Arginine HCL (conditionally essential A.A)
L-Methionine
L-Threonine
L-Tyrosine
L-Carnosine
L-Gluthione
L-Proline
L-Lysine
N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine
Carnitine / Acetyl-L-Carnitine
Important Considerations
In order to identify elite supplements offering the strongest and safest health and lifestyle benefits, a few simple rules should be followed.
Make sure that all herbal extracts and active enzymes are standardized. This guarantees the potency and amount of active ingredient. Safety, purity, and potency, are all guaranteed when a supplement manufacturer sources all raw materials from GMP registered and audited facilities. A supplement company's website should clearly outline ingredient sourcing protocols. Furthermore, all ingredients must have a Certificate of Analysis (COA) to confirm potency. Look for supplement companies who self manufacture. There are not many out there but those that are tend to be more quality focused and are not just out to make a quick buck.
By taking the time to study labels and know what to look for when it comes to vitamins for women you will end up with a safe, high quality supplement that does what it promises to and is true to its label. These type of products are few and far between in the supplement industry. Most supplements lack product integrity and are poorly put together by marketers and doctors rather than by highly qualified bio-scientists who work with good science.

Nursing Mothers Need Omega 3 Fatty Acids
Author: Michael ByrdDo you know why pregnant and nursing women should supplement their diet with omega 3 fatty acids each day?
Well, the omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, which are found only in salmon and other fatty fish, are vital for the optimum growth and development of her growing baby.
It's a proven fact that women who eat fatty fish on a regular basis increase their chances of having a full term, higher birth weight baby with a fully mature brain, better vision and a fully developed central nervous system.
And, after the birth, the baby's need for DHA and EPA continues. These omega 3 fatty acids are responsible for the early development of a newborn baby's brain, retina and central nervous system.
Did you know that an infant's brain continues to grow and develop rapidly for the first year after birth? In fact, it triples in size during this time. And 70% of this rapidly growing brain is made up of DHA and EPA.
That's why the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations and the U.S. National Institutes of Health recommend that all pregnant and lactating women eat fatty fish at least 2 times a week. Alternatively, they could supplement their diet with a pure fish oil supplement that provides a combined total of 1 gram per day of DHA and EPA.
But here in the United States, 85% of women are deficient in these vital omega 3 oils. And nearly 20% are so low that DHA and EPA cannot be detected in their blood at all.
So, if Mom is deficient in the omega 3s, her baby isn't getting the brain food it needs to be healthy and smart.
Pregnant women in the U.S. are told it's important to eat a balanced diet and take prenatal vitamins, containing adequate amounts of iron, calcium and folic acid. But that's about it.
Very few expectant and nursing mothers are ever told by their physician to take omega 3 fish oil supplements. Why this is so, I have no idea. But I suspect that it'll change in the future.
In the meantime, the only way baby can get these essential oils is from the mother's diet or supplementation. That's why so many pregnant and nursing mothers who want to have healthier, happier, smarter babies take personal responsibility for getting more fish oil omega 3 fatty acids in their diet.
Fish and fish oil are healthy foods. Even mercury contamination isn't a threat if you avoid eating large predator fish, such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel and white snapper (tilefish).
In fact, a recent Harvard School of Public Health research study concluded that fish oil health benefits, especially for pregnant and nursing mothers, far outweigh any perceived threat of mercury toxicity. So that's not a concern anyone needs to worry about.
So, if you're pregnant or nursing and want a smart, healthy baby, eat more fatty fish on a regular basis and take a high quality fish oil supplement. And, if you're not nursing, you can squeeze a little fish oil with DHA into your baby's formula.
Fish oil is essential for your child's health and well being. Make sure they get enough.
A Brief Guide to Low Carb Foods
Author: Trevor MulhollandIf you're on a low-carb diet, adhering to strictly low-carb recipes is recommended, but not necessary. Sometimes, it's enough to know which foods you should avoid, and which you may eat. The thing about low carb foods is, they may be a bit hard to get used to, especially if you've become too accustomed to eating fast food and vegetable oil-fried concoctions.
But if you know where to look, foods that are low on carbohydrates and fats may also taste good. You need not sacrifice taste for good health! Here are a few examples of low carb foods that also tickle the taste buds:
1. Barbecued meat and fish. Grilling meat is a great way to melt harmful fats out of a piece of meat or fish. Just be careful that the seasonings you include don't come with any particularly fatty or harmful chemicals. Low carb barbecue sauce is also usually diabetic-friendly.
2. Meat and fish products that are NOT cured with nitrates. Meat products already come with a hefty store of carbohydrates; the curing process, in which preservatives and seasonings are added, may add more to the natural supply. Fish products are generally not high on carbohydrates, although the seasonings that come with some fish products may add unwanted carbs to your diet. Nitrates are included in the list of chemicals that do this, and they are known carcinogens besides.
3. High fiber foods. Vegetables are among the natural foodstuffs that are high in fiber and low on carbohydrates. Flax seeds, for example, contain almost no carbohydrates at all! Other examples of high fiber, low carb vegetables are broccoli, spinach, and cauliflower.
Most foods, in fact, are healthy in moderation, as long as they are not packed with preservatives. Some manufacturers make it a point to process food even further so that the carbohydrates are filtered out - as in the case of cheese. Almost all cheeses contain usable carbohydrates in one form or another, but specially processed cheeses contain significantly less of it, if any. You may consider these products, but why spend more for stuff that you can prepare at home, the all-natural way?
Low carb foods are frequently prescribed in diets such as the South Beach Diet, the Atkins Diet, and other well-known eating routines. When in doubt about a certain foodstuff, you can refer to any of these diets, and the list of allowed or recommended foods included with the regimen.
The Exercise Ball Chair
Author: J AllenYou know those large rubber balls found in health clubs and gyms? How about replacing the desk chair in your office with one? Though far from becoming the norm, these unconventional seating options are showing up in more and more workplaces.
And not just in companies like Google, who are well known for embracing the unconventional. (I mean how many places can you bring your dog to work with you?) But firms like BMW, Sprint Nextel, and many more, as well as several schools are trying them out.
The most vocal proponents for their use consider them the ultimate solution for eliminating persistent backaches and chronic back pain. Other benefits include improved posture because there's no back support to slouch against, and heightened ability to concentrate.
In addition, there is a substantial exercise benefit. Instead of sitting idle for roughly 8 hours every day, that time is transformed into a workout focused mainly on your lower back and abdominal muscles. Once the balancing activity becomes second nature, they say the minimal, but continuous exertion of maintaining stability increases toning and fitness.
However, there are some physical therapists and ergonomic consultants who offer a word of caution. They say that replacing your desk chair with a fitness ball isn't for everyone, and there are some risks to be aware of. Starting out slowly is advised, using the ball for increasing intervals of time until adapting to the exertion required for sustained periods.
They also suggest that older employees should avoid these type chairs and that even with younger workers tending to adapt more easily, there are still those that find the benefits don't outweigh the constant activity required over extended durations.
More obvious risks are the safety factors. After all, it's a ball, and it can roll. If your attention is elsewhere, or you're in deep concentration, you may fall off possibly injuring yourself and/or send the ball careening into someone else.
To solve this problem some manufacturers build frames for the exercise balls, making them more like regular chairs complete with arms and backs. Of course in gaining stability, this solution seems to defeat the original benefit, leaving the user with nothing but a bouncy seat.
There is no doubt a lousy desk chair makes for an uncomfortable, less productive workday. It will also make one susceptible to all manner of soreness and backaches. But while the exercise ball chair has certainly demonstrated itself to be a solution for many, those in need of a better seating option would be well advised to check out an ergonomically designed, well-made desk chair.
And not just one - find the one that fits you. Everybody is different and experience has proven there is no such thing as one size fits all. It's amazing how much difference a properly fitted, top of the line ergonomic chair will make - it's like sitting on air.
No, you won't be exercising, so if that's your goal, consider the ball. But if you don't want to even notice the chair, and your desire is to feel as good leaving at days end as when you arrived, spend some money on a real chair. I mean if you're spending a third of every day seated, why wouldn't you? You can still get the ball for diversion - it's only about $30.

Smoking While Pregnant
Author: Mike DurandFor so many years now we have know that smoking while pregnant is not healthy, but smoking has been a part of our lives, regardless of whether we smoke or not. And for that it has been a detrimental factor in everybody's lives; sad to say, that includes the unborn babies.
Surveys show that many mothers are still smoking while pregnant. They contend that it does not affect their baby at all. In most instances, these are the mothers that do not care for their unborn child, because if they did they would know that smoking poses great danger during pregnancy. They would know that it is currently one of the major causes of infant deaths in our society today. If your smoking while pregnant, you are more likely to birth a child who is underweight. Low birth weight babies are at greater risk for childhood and adult illnesses and even death. Babies of smokers have less muscle mass and more fat than babies of non smokers, the child is also more likely to develop respiratory problems later in life.
Basically, cigarette smoke alone is full of chemicals, some studies even state it has more than 2,500 chemicals. Some chemicals like tar, carbon monoxide, and nicotine were considered as the most dangerous substance for the fetus. It has long been proven how these chemicals can greatly affect the development of the fetus inside the mother's womb.
Mothers who smoke while pregnant run a risk of ectopic pregnancy. This is especially viable when the mother is a heavy smoker during the first trimester of her pregnancy.
Ectopic pregnancy refers to the state wherein the embryo is embedded outside the uterus, which is contrary to what normal pregnancy should be. Usually, it is embedded in the fallopian tube. In this manner, the fetus has to be removed because this kind of pregnancy will never survive. This fetus will never survive outside of the uterus where a fetus gets all the nourishment and protection that it needs. Prolonging this condition will only risk the mother's life.
Smoking while pregnant will increase the probability that the mother will develop complications in the placenta. Reports show that placental problems are actually happening in about 1% of pregnancies. The most common problem is placenta previa where the placenta is connected very low in the uterus and is almost in the cervix.
Another problem is the deterioration of fetal growth. Smoking during pregnancy results in low infant birth weight. For so many years now, reports show that there had been significant difference between babies with smoking mothers than those who have non-smoking mothers.
Greater risks are imposed on babies who relatively weigh less than the normal babies. They may acquire certain diseases like cerebral palsy, mental retardation, and the worst is death.
There are also reports on how smoking increases the probabilities of birth defects such as cleft lip and cleft palate.
Moreover, babies born with mothers who were smoking while pregnant have higher incidences of sudden infant death syndrome. If ever these infants survive, they may still incur diseases like asthma, behavioral problems, or learning disabilities.
After the child is born, it doesn't get any better for babies with mothers who were smoking while pregnant, they still face problems after birth within their environment. Infants eighteen months and younger who have second hand smoke surrounding them in their houses are responsible for up to three hundred thousand cases of pneumonia and bronchitis.
Studies have revealed that nicotine can be passed on to the baby through breastfeeding. There had been experiments that proved the presence of nicotine in the babies system through urine testing. It later showed that higher percentage of nicotine was found in babies who were breastfeeding by smoking mothers.
Most experts contend that the problem lies within the mother's urge to get back to smoking right after they gave birth. They contend that it is safe now because the baby was born already. They still insist that they, in fact, stopped smoking during their pregnancy.
The concluding scenario here is that when the mother continues to smoke during the formative years of her child, chances are she is already shaping a child that will most likely be a smoker themselves. That is, if the child can endure the dangers smoking can do with his or her health.
So, what's the point here? The fact that the mother does not care for her own health is one thing. But the fact that she puts greater risk on her baby because of her vice is another thing, and that it is the most saddening part.
Babies should be given the right to live a decent, normal, and healthy life. So, for mother's out there, please bear in mind that aside from the long range dangers associated with smoking your babies should not suffer. Let's take care of them simply by not smoking.

Why Do We Smoke?
Author: Mike DurandCigarette manufactures have been required to put warnings on all their packages of cigarettes to tell us that cigarette smoking is dangerous to our health so why do we still smoke. According to United States studies, cigarette smoking is responsible for one out of every five deaths in the U.S. Smoking robs more than five million years of lifespan because of premature death. Cigarettes are the most addictive and destructive over-the-counter drug known to man. Cigarette smoking is equivocal to lung cancer. With this said, one may wonder why do we still smoke?
Before World War I, tobacco was smoked in the form of cigars. They were primarily smoked by the wealthy. Cigarettes, which are basically leftovers of the cigar making process, were smoked by the less affluent. The number of people who smoked cigarettes boomed when tobacco companies started to mass-produce cigarettes. Their clientele: soldiers of World War I.
As early as 1892 cases of epilepsy, insanity and death were frequently reported as the result of smoking cigarettes, while such physicians as Dr. Lewis Sayre, Dr. Hammond, and Sir Morell Mackenzie of England, name heart trouble, blindness, cancer and other diseases cause by cigarettes smoking.
Leading physicians of America in 1892 unanimously condemn cigarette smoking as one of the vilest and most destructive evils that ever befell the youth of any country, declaring that its direct tendency is a deterioration of the race.
It took some time before modern day physicians would acknowledged the deadly by-product of smoking. Doctors only took notice of the increase in lung cancer incidents 20
to 30 years after WWI. With this increase, Reader's Digest published an article "Cancer by the Carton," which prompted the public to be aware of the effects of cigarette smoking. Similar articles have been published to condemn cigarette smoking. Medical advancements have proven the correlation between cigarette smoking and lung cancer. But despite all of these, lung cancer has remained to be one of the most common diseases in the modern world so why do we still smoke.
Surgeon General Luther Terry issued a landmark concluding, for the first time, that smoking is a direct cause of lung cancer, heart disease, and emphysema in 1964 and then again on May 27, 2004 the U.S. Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona released a new comprehensive report on smoking and health, revealing for the first time that smoking causes diseases in nearly every organ of the body. Published 40 years after the surgeon general's first report on smoking, which concluded that smoking was a definite cause of three serious diseases, this newest report finds that cigarette smoking is conclusively linked to diseases such as leukemia, cataracts, pneumonia and cancers of the cervix, kidney, pancreas and stomach so why do we still smoke?
Cigarettes' most common ingredient is nicotine. Nicotine is more addictive than heroine, which is in fact, a prohibited drug in most parts of the world. Aside from heroine, doctors ranked nicotine ahead of alcohol and cocaine in terms of dependence. Indeed, research has shown that smoking four cigarettes a day can induce life-long addiction to nicotine.
The Cigarette manufactures are not helping according to this report from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, they are one of only 3 states that require tobacco companies to submit reports. What they found is, from 1998 to 2004 the amount of nicotine in a cigarette has increased steadily, the study showed that regardless of brand that the amount of nicotine that is actually delivered to the smokers lungs has increased significantly overall, nicotine yields increased ten percent. Marlboro, Newport, and Camel, the three most popular brands with young smokers, all delivered significantly more nicotine, and Kool menthol increased twenty percent. With all this new information why do we still smoke?
Maybe it's because people who smoke tend to see smoking as a part of their personality, as something that they cannot live without. That is a clear sign of addiction. And the addiction to chemicals, which in the case of nicotine, is considered a sickness.
What adds to the addiction to smoke cigarettes is the psychological pleasure or satisfaction a smoker gains when puffing a cigarette. Smokers describe smoking as a "pat-on-the-back" after a hard day's work. One smoker confesses that it is not the taste of the cigarette; it is actually the sense of satisfaction that you get from it that keeps you smoking. Studies have also shown that depression is twice as common to people who smoke against those who do not smoke. Some also use cigarettes as an ersatz activity to pass time and be patient. Just like in war movies, when a soldier is waiting for the signal to attack, he is seen holding a gun in one hand and a cigarette in the other.
Nicotine triggers the smoker's brain to be more efficient in processing information. It also reduces anxiety and induces euphoria. Researches have also shown that nicotine induces alertness and arousal, and sedation and relaxation based on the dose of nicotine intake. These effects, though, do not outweigh the harmful effect of nicotine addiction, which is lung cancer, and possibly other ailments, which will all eventually lead to death, so why do we still smoke?
People who cannot stop smoking may see it the other way around. They may be blinded by the short-term effects of nicotine. Aside from nicotine, smokers rarely know that a cigarette contains acetylene (fuel used in welding), cyanide, nitrogen oxide, and carbon monoxide, all of which are harmful chemicals. These chemicals are also used as poison, so why do we still smoke?
Psychosocial factors also contribute to why people continue to smoke. People surrounded by people who smoke, like family and friends, can soon develop the habit of smoking. And as its addictive nature, the smoker will have a hard time quitting the habit. An environment permissive and indifferent towards cigarette smoking will produce significant numbers of smokers.
Recently, researchers have reported that genetic variables also play a role on why people keep on smoking. These genetic variables affect the tendency of a person to smoke to the chances of quitting.
Given the many facts and figures related to the hazards of smoking cigarettes, the percentage of smokers has not experienced any considerable decrease. In fact, it continues to increase. The World Health Organization has estimated that by year 2020, tobacco will kill more people than any single disease in the world.
Educating people about the dangers of smoking doesn't seem to help. For some smokers, thinking that smoking is directly related to lung cancer and eventually death is a myth yet to be proven.
I don't know the answer to why do we still smoke, I do know that smoking is not only a habit but in fact that smoking is also an addiction, and sooner or later, this will eventually cause death,so why do we still smoke?
With the cigarette manufactures increasing the nicotine in tobacco which is a highly addictive drug that affects nearly every organ in our body it makes it more difficult to quit smoking, maybe its time to answer the question why do we still smoke. We know that smoking is a very powerful addiction and with the increase of nicotine, it can take multiple attempts to quit smoking, it's time for you to answer the question why do we still smoke and seek out the help you need to quit.
